Social Events

A Better World by Design proudly offers two exciting social events in conjunction with this year’s conference. Be prepared for live music, organic mixology, artist demonstrations, and local food tasting at a pair of Providence’s emerging hotspots: the Box Office and the Steel Yard. These innovative spaces exemplify the community and creativity that characterize Providence, Rhode Island.

Friday Night Mixer

Where: The Box Office – 460 Harris Avenue, Providence, RI

When: Friday October 1st, 8:30 to 10:30 PM

Our Friday night mixer will unfold at the grand opening of the Box Office, the former Harris Lumber site and Providence’s most heavily anticipated space. Once an abandoned piece of Providence history, the site now boasts 12 office spaces constructed from recycled shipping containers. The space is an achievement in sustainable design, using 25% less energy than a conventional new office building to operate. Newton Vineyards and Trinity Brewhouse will be hosting an exclusive wine & beer tasting. Food vendors include Chez Pascal, La Strada Wood Fired Pizza, and PVD Juice Co. Be prepared for a live Video Mixing and musical performance by DJ Lively Experiment and Thirsty Sounds.

Saturday Evening Gala

Where: The Steel Yard – 27 Sims Avenue, Providence, RI

When: Saturday October 2nd, 8 to 11 PM

The Steel Yard is a 60,000 square foot facility located along the Woonasquatucket River in the heart of Providence’s Valley neighborhood. It features a foundry, ceramics studio, welding shop, and outdoor exhibition spaces. Slated for the evening will be a recycling-themed exhibition by local artisans, a farm-to-bar with cocktails by Local121, and a local food tasting. Sounds will be provided by DJ Lively Experiment and Thirsty Sounds.

The Better World community is full of ideas in all stages of development, from rough sketches on napkins to full-blown product lines. If you’ve got a project you want to exhibit, the Expo is the place to do it. New this year, the Expo will take place on Sunday, October 3rd in Sayles Hall at Brown. The Expo will allow exhibitors to set up tables to display their work in order to gain exposure to the rest of the Better World community. A Better World by Design encourages exhibitors to involve conference attendees, show videos, and bring products to the Expo.

If you or your organization is interested in being part of the Expo, register here. For further questions, contact us.

Bike Train

To kick off Bike Walk Week and to celebrate the conference’s third year, A Better World by Design has partnered with the Rhode Island Bicycle Coalition to initiate a Bike Train that will stimulate sustainable systems of transportation through the facilitation of environmentally-friendly green travel options. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the conference a train will begin at approximately 7:15 AM 12 miles north of Providence and will arrive at 8:20 AM at the conference. The route will also offer an alternate starting point for attendees who wish to participate in a shorter ride. Participants will receive a conference t-shirt as well as a chance to win the hand-painted limited edition conference bicycle brought to you by REI Bike. Please follow the link for the complete route. To register for the Bike Train, please contact Gabriela_Baiter (AT) brown (DOT) edu.
